The Effects of Empathy in the School System

As Educational Assistants we have the ability to empathize positively towards the students we teach and care for daily. Positive empathy will allow us to use the critical skills we’ve acquired and use them to support our students in the classroom. Through this, we are able to provide educational, physical and inclusive support. If we display cognitive empathy with our students, we can put ourselves in their shoes. We can treat them the way we would want to be treated if we were in need of support.
"School-aged students with disabilities often have negative school experiences related to their having a disability, and school counselors, administrators, and teachers can help to create more positive school experiences that promote their academic, career, and personal/social growth.”(Roots of Empathy, 2017). According to this article, research has been conducted to find that not all school faculty members display empathy towards students in their classroom, perhaps due to inexperience in working with children who require extra support. Our roles are critical in this regard and we must advocate for our students by educating our fellow faculty members on empathy and inclusion in order to be able to provide a positive and inclusive environment for our students.
