Roots of Empathy Programs in Our Schools
Betsy Penrose
My daughter’s school has embraced two educational programs which promotes empathy building techniques. I interviewed her and this is what she said:
“A Bullying Program In Halton Schools teaches empathy building techniques is called B.R.A.V.O. Bravo stands for building, respect, attitudes and values with others. What bravo does is teaches grade 6 children about bullying, peer pressure, respect and being empathetic to one another. How this program prepared me to overcome bullying in my school was by teaching me “Steps to Change My Attitude Toward Bullying” and how to help myself or someone else if we become a victim of bullying."
"At my school we have a mindfulness program called “Mind Up”. Every day we sit quietly for 5 minutes and breathe calmly. Each week we try a new mindful activity such as mindful eating and mindful senses.”
Empathy is innate in all of us. As Educational Assistants, we can teach our students to empathize with each other to overcome obstacles in the school environment such as bullying and inclusion.
